The world's pre-eminent Carson McCullers scholar Carlos Dews will discuss his newly collected and edited correspondence of the oft-misunderstood Columbus native.

Carson McCullers became a profligate letter writer after shooting to fame with her first novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Now Carlos Dews, the pre-eminent McCullers scholar and founder of the Carson McCullers Center at Columbus State University, has collected and edited this correspondence into his latest book ALL THE LOVE YOU CAN USE: THE LETTERS OF CARSON McCULLERS. Intimate, earnest, and as heartbreaking as it is uplifting, this collection is a product of remarkable scholarship and dedication. The result is the most comprehensive portrait of McCullers ever published, a true window into the emotional landscape behind her work and the deeply held loves she had throughout her brief but exceptional life. Carson McCullers (1917-1967) was the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Member of the Wedding, Reflections in a Golden Eye, and Clock Without Hands. Born in Columbus, Georgia, on February 19, 1917, she became a promising pianist and enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York when she was seventeen, but lacking money for tuition, she never attended classes. Instead she studied writing at Columbia University, which ultimately led to The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, the novel that made her an overnight literary sensation. On September 29, 1967, at age fifty, she died in Nyack, New York, where she is buried.

Carlos Dews is the leading authority on the life and work of Carson McCullers.  He edited McCullers’s unfinished autobiography, Illumination and Night Glare, and edited the Library of America’s two volume Complete Works of Carson McCullers. He was the founding director of the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians at Columbus State University.  Dews is Professor of English at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy.
